Mark Chisnell reports as Jourdain takes the lead and Ellen goes up to third

Friday December 22nd 2000, Author: Mark Chisnell, Location: United Kingdom
Weather at 0000, 24/12/00But the forecast for overnight Saturday-to-Sunday (left) shows the low pressure well south, with strong westerly breeze blowing all the way under New Zealand at Kingfisher's current latitude.

The strategy of the three 'Buffalo Girls' (go round the outside) will still be to let the low pass in front of them, and we can expect to see these boats all gybing again as they try to line up on the latitude that will allow them to skim the top of the low, while not going any further north than they have to, beyond the direct course.

There is still risk involved in this strategy - it's possible the low pressure will decide not to go south after all. And if it stays where it is, all of a sudden the north is going to be the place to be.

This is presumably the thinking behind Marc Thiercelin's strategy, who still hadn't gybed this morning, preferring to follow in the wake of Desjoyeaux. He's slipped back behind Dubois, and has actually lost distance to the leader - and if I had to bet, my money would be on Ellen, Dubois and Coville.
