The first leg of the BT Global Challenge finished in Boston Harbour on Thursday afternoon at 13.22 GMT. Quadstone, skippered by Alex Phillips, was first home, holding their comfortable lead to the finish. Our diary writers - Andy Magrath and Conrad Humphreys - aboard LG FLATRON were as good as their word, pushing all the way to the finish and finally securing third. BP was just ahead of them, and Compaq just behind. The order after that was VERITAS, Isle of Man, Logica and Spirit of Hong Kong.

According to the BT Global Challenge website, still racing at 10.52 GMT on the 29th September were Save the Children with 60 nm to go, then Team SpirIT 64 nm behind her, followed by Norwich Union and Olympic Group with 198 and 216 miles to the finish respectively. The overall scoring is on points for the place on each leg, so the big time gaps won't matter too much to the tail end of the fleet - the damage will just be to their confidence.
