There is plenty of British involvement in what is now a very international race

At a ceremony to unveil the new trophy for the Volvo Ocean Race - a Waterford Crystal piece called Fighting Finish - it also became clear how much British involvement there is already in the race, without a 'flagged' British boat. And Volvo head honcho, Helge Alten, spelled out at the presentation how international the race has become with only two boats with any strong national allegiance - which he defined as the same nationality skipper as sponsor - and even those will carry a highly international crew.
The British Volvo involvement to date is:

Jez Fanstone - Team News Corp: Appointed by Ross Field to skipper News Corp and has done Olympic campaigns in both the Finn and Soling, sailed for both the United Kingdom and United States in the Admiral's Cup and competed in the 1997-8 Round the World Race on Silk Cut.

Neal McDonald - Team News Corp: Will be a watch captain on News Corp. Winner of International 14 World Championship, competed in the 1988 Olympics, in the 1995 America's Cup for Australia, the Admiral's Cup and Southern Cross championship. Competed on Silk Cut in the Whitbread 1997-8 and is currently a watch leader on Club Med.

Julian Salter - Team News Corp: Will be a navigator on Team News Corp alongside Nik White. Has represented Britain in a winning Admiral's Cup boat and taken part on the international match racing circuit. Was part of the winning team on Barlo Plastics in the 2000 Tour Voile.

Tim Powell - Team Tyco: Winning helmsman in the Tour Voile on Barlo Plastics in 2000 and top-scoring boat in the 1999 Admiral's Cup. Was on the Dolphin & Youth in the Whitbread 1993-4 and back again for the 1997-8 race on Silk Cut.

Gerry Mitchell - Team Tyco: Has sailed Whitbreads with Tim Powell on Dolphin & Youth and Silk Cut and represented Britain in the Admiral's Cup as well as competing on the World Match Racing circuit.

Steve Hayles - Team Tyco; Came to prominence at the age of 19 as navigator on Dolphin & Youth in the 1993-4 Whitbread and then went on to do the same job on Silk Cut in 1997-8. Consultant to top yachtsmen on weather routing and its design implications.

Guy Salter - Team Tyco; Was part of the Barlo Plastics Mumm 36 crew when they became top scoring yacht in the 1999 Champagne Mum Admiral's Cup and takes part in a round the world event for the first time.

Matt Humphries - SEB: Was skipper of Dolphin & Youth in 1993-4 and then was a watch leader alongside Erle Williams for Gurra Krantz on Swedish Match in the 1997-8 race. Is back with Krantz for a second time as watch leader.

Jason Carrington - Assa Abloy Racing Team: Is first helping to build the new boat for the Volvo Ocean Race at Green Marine in the UK and then will be a senior member of the race crew. A well-known figure internationally on both the ocean and match racing circuits after being a member of the Silk Cut crew in 1997-98.

Ian Moore is also trying out for three months as the second navigator on illbruck.
