Vendee Globe - 1130 - 1/2/01

Mark Chisnell reports on the string that ties together Ellen and Michel Desjoyeaux

Thursday February 1st 2001, Author: Mark Chisnell, Location: United Kingdom
Weather at 0000, 3/2/01 No real change to the situation shaping up ahead of them either, as we can see from the Saturday forecast (right), plenty more trade winds before they start to get close to the action in the centre of the Azores High.

It still looks as though the centre of this will split as the leaders get close to it, and create two separate zones of high pressure. If this happens as forecast, the best place to be will be the western side of the eastern centre, which is where they will find a southerly wind, and fast downwind sailing.

But at the moment they are all too far west to get into this good breeze, and from his position furthest west, Roland Jourdain might be feeling the first twinges of concern. But this is going to be a very dynamic situation as the high reforms in front of them, and the detail of timing and position will be crucial. We must wait another day or so to see how the forecast shapes up.

Further back, Josh Hall seems to have rediscovered his competitive instincts as Mike Golding has closed him down from an eight day disadvantage after Team Group 4's dismasting. Hall was back in front this morning, though by a bare couple of miles in the 'Battle of the Brits'.
