Mark Chisnell reports as Michel Desjoyeaux leads round the Horn

Thursday January 11th 2001, Author: Mark Chisnell, Location: United Kingdom
Weather at 0222, 12/1/01The forecast is pretty unstable, and the picture this morning is different to yesterday's. The low now looks like it will stall for a while, rather than rounding Cape Horn smoothly, and then develop a pair of centres (right). The eastern one will eventually split off and head east round the Horn, taking anyone who's in it with them.

The longer it takes to do that, the more punishing it will be for Michel Desjoyeaux. At the moment there is quite a big high pressure ridge ahead of him, and not a lot of breeze. The timing of the movement of the low is crucial to the fortunes of the leaders, as their choices are highly constrained by the fact that they have to round Cape Horn. There's no open ocean to escape to for better breeze.

Those that can find the strength to squeeze the most from the difficult conditions should prosper - especially with the help of a healthy dollop of luck. Marc Thiercelin was moaning yesterday that God was English - let's hope he's right.
