Mark Chisnell reports as Ellen's race for second hots up

Tuesday January 2nd 2001, Author: Mark Chisnell, Location: United Kingdom
Weather at 0509, 4/1/00We can see from the Thursday morning forecast (right) that this dumb-bell like low pressure system is still in place. The western end hasn't moved too far east - so the pack behind the front four should be able to catch it. And while the eastern end has moved much further east, it's also stayed north.

This is going to create a situation where there are easterly headwinds below about 55S or even 50S right through this week. Cape Horn is positioned at about 57S, and the leaders are closing this major waypoint down at speed - the current ETA is 10th January.

The longer and the further they have to go north of the latitude of Cape Horn (just visible in the very bottom right of the image) to avoid headwinds, the bigger the detour they will have to make to get down there when circumstances do allow. And of course - the greater the potential for those behind to cut the corner.

Please note that two different methods of calculating the Distance to Finish are being used, one by Virtual Spectator and one by the Vendee Globe Race Office, we will try to always make it clear which we are using!
