Olympic medallists are busying themselves coaching the next generation of British sailing stars, as well as some of the less ambitious. This week, the likes of Ian Barker and Shirley Robertson are down at Weymouth engaged in some formal RYA training for the World Class Performance and Development Squads.

Barker and his 49er crew from the Olympics, Simon Hiscocks are to hold an RS800 coaching weekend in Plymouth on 17/18 March, backed up by 49er and International 14 supercrew Zeb Elliot. The weekend will be based at the Mount Batten Centre, Plymouth and is being organised by the RS Class Association supported by Holt Allen.

Plymouth has a very fast growing fleet of 800s with 12 boats now actively racing in the Sound; the training weekend is open to boats outside of Plymouth, but at the time of writing RS secretary Pete Vincent told madforsailing there were only three places left, as numbers are strictly limited to 18 boats.

Simon Hiscocks is also coaching a group of 49ers at Datchet Water at the end of February, but that event is already booked up.

Meanwhile, madforsailing's own Iain Percy is due to launch his new company, Competitive Sailing, at the Dinghy Exhibition at the beginning of March, and he already has his first event in place, a three-weekend coaching series for single-handed sailors at Hayling Island.

The coaching team will be led by Iain Percy and will include Andrew Simpson, Paul Goodison and Paul Hobson and many others from the world of single-handed sailing.

Percy, speaking to the madforsailing office from Singapore, where he is out discussing coaching requirements with some Laser sailors, commented: "It will be a full programme, and vital for anyone looking to make their way at the top level of single-handed competition." The package for the three weekends is £120, which includes lunch, dinner and evening entertainment.

The three weekends at Hayling are 24-25 February, 10-11 March and 31 March/1 April. For further information, you can send Iain an email.
