Assa Abloy crewman Guillermo Altadill has won the Best Sportsman of the Year 2001 award, in the 'cruising' category (for some inexplicable reason). This will be presented at a dala dinner called Nit de la Vela tonight in Barcelona. The award is given by the Catalonian Sailing Federation and one of the former winners is the King of Spain, Juan Carlos I.

The ever smiling Spaniard has been involved in four Olympic games, has made 14 Atlantic crossings and taken part in more than 200,000 miles of offshore yacht racing. Aside from being a Olympic coach for

"I'm very happy for this award. To know that the struggle in so many competitions is recognized by your peers really makes a difference," commented Altadill when he received the good news.

However, picking up the award will be a little difficult for him tonight as Assa Abloy surges north, currently in fifth place in the Volvo Ocean Race.
