Campos first IMS600 Champion
Saturday October 12th 2002, Author: James Boyd, Location: none selectedThis last day of racing promised to be intense with the struggle between Telefónica MoviStar and Siemens Mobile, both capable of getting the first ever title of IMS 600 World Champion, at this race organised by Monte Real Club Yates and sponsored by Xunta de Galicia, Spanair and Slam.
As the previous days, the lack of wind was again the chief problem, and when the first windward/leeward race started, it was abandoned one hour later due to a 90 degree wind shift.
At about 1500 the first race of the day finally started successfully and got to an end with no problem. Pedro Campos on board Telefónica MoviStar led all the time, and most importantly for him: his main rival Siemens Mobile was only able to score a 4th position.
A second windward/leeward was raced in order to get the last necessary points to achieve 6.5, the minimum to validate this regatta as a World Championship under ISAF rules, - despite of the protest of several crews, who had to catch flights home.
The last windward/leeward brought no changes, with Pedro Campos leading again. Siemens Mobile, pulled off second place but this was not enough to win them Worlds, which was taken by Pedro Campos and Telefónica MoviStar, Campos scoring his 8th World Championship win.
