Around Alone NZ stop chosen

New location announced for Around Alone stopover

Clipper Ventures have announced that the Antipodean stopover port of Around Alone will not be Wellington or Auckland, but the New Zealand port of Tauranga.

Tauranga is located some 250km south of Auckland in the Bay of Plenty and is where Graham Dalton's new HSBC-sponsored Open 60 Hexagon was built. The event will be based at the modern Tauranga Yacht & Powerboat Club, a five minute drive from the Bridge Marina, where the boats will be berthed.

Clipper Ventures Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, commented "The reason for this choice is that we were very impressed by the enormous enthusiasm, commitment and excitement from the local community, business and government shown in Tauranga's bid".

Part of the problem for the organisers has been scheduling the stopover during the America's Cup - Auckland, quite simply, is full. The boats are due to arrive on 28 December 2002 and will restart on 26 January 2003. Fortunately this will coincide with the lay-over period between the finals of the Louis Vuitton Cup and the America's Cup itself.
