Swan 45 class debut
The Zegna Trophy will see a fleet of five Swan 45's racing under the Swan 45 Class Rules, representing France, Germany and Italy. The strength of Nautor's innovative performance model has grown very quickly since its launch in September 2001, with a full one design circuit established and supported by a worldwide fleet of Swan 45s. But there is no greater accolade to the success of the Swan 45 than the calibre of sailors that wish to race her, and at the first Area Championships, Whitbread Round the World Race and America's Cup legend, Paul Cayard will be on board Leonardo Ferragamo's Swan 45, Cuordileone.
Cayard has always had a close relationship with Nautor's Swan, offering his wealth of experience to the company's progress within the racing circuit and with him onboard Swan 45, this first Championship guarantees to provide the very best in 'real time'
Cayard comments: "The Swan 45 Class is one of the most exciting current developments in sailing. Combining this luxurious model with a well run one design circuit will allow competitive owners to compete in a high performance yacht on a top international circuit. I can't wait to get out on the water and see what this racing thoroughbred is truly capable of."
The Mediterranean Area Championships mark the start of a full racing series with two other Area Championships covering the main territories of East Coast of America and Northern Europe. The Swan 45's racing prowess has created quite a stir on the international racing circuit with the 2002 season seeing honours for this debutante in many international regattas from the Giraglia Rolex Cup to the American Yacht Club Spring Series.
Dr. Carlo Croce, President of Yacht Club Italiano comments on the club's involvement with this exciting new class: "Yacht Club Italiano has been involved since the very beginning with this project: the Swan 45 Class was christened in Portofino at the summer Club House facilities during the Zegna Trophy in 2002, together with the first Swan 45. The same boat won the 50th Giraglia Rolex Cup, which was a milestone in the Club's history."
He continues, "I could not think of a better way for the Club to "marry" the Class- we are very excited to be involved and are really look forward to the Swan 45 racing series."
In addition to the Swan 45 Class fleet competing at the Zegna Trophy, there will be the well-raced Swan 80 Kora. This fine example of Nautor's larger performance models was helmed by Cayard at the 2002 Swan Cup and hopes to yet again prove its racing ability in the IMS Class, which last year was won by Swan 70 Bugia Bianca.
In true Nautor's style, the focus will not just be on the water. To commemorate this inaugural event, Nautor's Swan will be hosting a cocktail reception on the Terrace of the Yacht Club Italiano on Friday 9th May. Nautor's Swan will officially welcome all the owners and crews to the start of the Swan 45 Class racing season and will look forward to what promises to be a truly thrilling regatta.
