Anglo-Dutch win

At conclusion of 8 metre Worlds in Geneva

Sunday July 11th 2004, Author: Phil Crebbin, Location: Italy
Britain’s Philip Crebbin helming Lafayette won his fifth 8 Metre Class World Cup, after a break of 10 years since his last victory, in mostly light and flukey conditions this week in Geneva.

From a fleet of 30 boats including 10 modern yachts Lafayette with owner J.Fuytier from Holland aboard, sailed super consistently to take six second places, two thirds and a fifth in the nine races sailed. Racing had to be called off to-day leaving the Dutch boat with a single point advantage over P. Groh’s Fleur de Lys from Switzerland and G.Shaltz’s Aluette helmed by designer Jacques Fauroux from France.

Held on a placid Lake Lehman they were in the lead after their first day fifth, despite Lafayette’s optimisation for the sea and strong winds with her relatively smaller sail area. The 13 year-old yacht was, however, sporting a new Doug Peterson-designed winged keel for this event. Thus Crebbin won overall without actually winning a race despite often leading when the fickle breeze vanished causing the fleet to close up or that race to be abandoned.

Swiss teams took the next three places with Yquem, Gitana Sixty and Gefion while the Sira Cup for classic hulled 8s with modern rigs was won by Alain and Gilles Minos’ Cutty Tou and the Cartier Cup for the totally original vintage yachts was won by Giovani Monga’s Bona from Italy.
