Looking good for Cammas

Two bullets for the green boat at the Marseille ORMA Grand Prix

Two straight wins for the impeccible Franck Cammas looks set to assure the young Groupama skipper both victory in the Marseille Grand Prix and the 2004 ORMA Championship.

Two races were held today starting with a 43 mile coastal race. The races got underway a light 3-5 knot breeze from the southwest, a slightly overcast sky enough to prevent the sea breeze kicking in with any consistency. The course took the seven multihulls west past the îles du Frioul round a mark off Sausset les Pins before return to Marseilles via the îlets de Riou.

Trying to repeat her success from yesterday Sopra Group put in an early port tack as the fleet scattered across the race course in search of breeze. Meanwhile Sergio Tacchini was leading the bulk of the fleet attempting to cover Groupama, with Géant close behind.

The order for the race was pretty much set at the Sausset les Pins mark by which time the wind had piped up to 10-12 knots and Franck Cammas had taken over the lead ahead of Sergio Tacchini.

In the next windward-leeward race the pressure proved too much for Karine Fauconnier who was over early as was Philippe Monnet's Sopra Group. But in the very light breeze - 3-4 knots at the start, 8 knots at the weather mark - Sergio Tacchini was able to round the top mark in first place. However this was not to last, as Cammas once again edged ahead to win ahead of Gitana II who had made gains by sailing close to the islands of Fruili. Sergio Tacchini fell into a hole and finished sixth - disaster!

With a nine point lead it is hard to imagine Groupama losing the Grand Prix and the ORMA championship.

Finally Thomas Coville's Sodebo had hoped to get back on the race course following her dismasting during training on Thursday. Although her mast fell down intact it has since been inspected and has been written off.

Results after four races:

1-Franck Cammas – Groupama (2+1+1+1) 5 points
2-Karine Fauconnier – Sergio Tacchini (4+2+2+6) 14 points
