In less than one week, over 20 Swans from five countries will converge in Capri, Italy, to take part in the first ever Swan 45 Gold Cup. This inaugural "world championship" of the Swan 45 Class takes place from 9th to 15th October and is organised by Yacht Club de Capri, Italy and Yacht Club Italiano. The beautiful Bay of Naples will act as a dramatic backdrop to a challenging programme of racing and with the regatta attracting world class sailors as well as international Swan owners, it is sure to enter the yachting calendar with a bang.

Jasper Feldt, Match and One-Design racing enthusiast and tactician on board Opus One, owned by Wolfgang Stolz, is looking forward to the Swan 45 Gold Cup: "The Swan 45s are so comfortable, yet at the same time are highly competitive and evenly matched, which makes the Swan 45 Class so much fun. The number of Swan 45's in the fleet and the high calibre of sailors racing them is testament to the success of the class. There are many contenders for the "world champion" title in Capri - we'd just be happy to be in the top five!"

The regatta will bring together a host of Swan owners, world class sailors and notable members of the sailing world, and Nautor's Swan is thrilled to welcome sponsors Ermenegildo Zegna, Morgan Stanley and NetJets to this event. Ermenegildo Zegna will host the Swan 45 Gold Cup Opening Reception at the beautiful Capri Palace Hotel and Spa, Anacapri and will, along with Morgan Stanley and NetJets, host race days during the regatta, as well as evening receptions for the owners and crews.

The Swan 45 Class has rapidly become a popular and competitive One-Design Class, since the Swan 45 made its debut in the international racing scene just three years ago. The owner-driver element to the class has attracted some of the yachting world's most famous names and a familiar roster of over 20 Swan owners have signed up to compete for the Swan 45 Gold Cup, which has been beautifully handcrafted by Asprey of London.

World-renowned sailor Vincenzo Onorato will be competing with his Swan 45 Mascalzone Latino and Swan 45 Northern European Area Champion, Keith Miller will be competing on board his yacht Crackerjack. Other familiar and popular Swans on the water will be Goombay Smash, owned by William Douglass and Vertigo, owned by Marco Salvi, who has enjoyed success at both the Sardinia Rolex Cup and the recent Rolex Swan Cup, winning the Swan 45 Class overall in each regatta. Salvi commented: "We are all looking forward to the Swan 45 Gold Cup. It is going to be the end of a very important season for the Swan 45 Class and is likely to be even more competitive than the Rolex Swan Cup, with an even larger fleet of Swan 45's."

In addition to Swan owners who are themselves world class yachtsmen, a host of international sailing stars will be crewing the impressive list of Swan 45's in Capri. Canadian double Olympian Phil Gow will be crewing on board American Tom Stark's Rush Reloaded as will World Match Racing Champion, Ed Baird, in his role as tactician.

Baird, who was tactician on board Massimo Ferragamo's Bellicosa during the Rolex Swan Cup, said of the Swan 45 Class: "I am very impressed with it. The racing is close, fair and gentlemanly but very intense, which is why the class has grown so quickly. To have a 'world championship' now is very appropriate because, truly, the world is racing these boats."

Paul Cayard, all time sailing legend and tactician on board Leonardo Ferragamo's Cuor di Leone, commented on the success of the Swan 45 Class: "It is an incredible feat that in three short years the fleet of Swan 45's worldwide has grown to 45 boats - with over 20 of them competing in the Swan 45 Gold Cup in Capri it is sure to be a very competitive regatta."

The Swan 45 Gold Cup will take place over seven days and will include nine races of predominantly windward-leeward courses plus one long race. As well as seeing competitive and challenging action on the water, the 500 plus participants of the Swan 45 Gold Cup will be entertained by Nautor's Swan along with the Yacht Club de Capri and Yacht Club Italiano, who will be hosting an impressive programme of social events.

As anticipation builds in the final days before the Swan 45 Gold Cup, the sailing world turns its eyes on Capri. This inaugural One-Design Class regatta will establish the World Champion of the Swan 45 Class and will lay the foundations for this to become one of the top international One-Design racing events. As the success of the Swan 45 Class continues to build world wide, even more entries are expected for the next edition of the Gold Cup, which is to be held in Key West, USA in 2006.
