Round seven of the Garmin Hamble Winter Series cancelled due to high winds

Racing was abandoned for all fleets on day 7 of the Garmin Hamble Winter Series due to strong winds and poor visibility in the race area. Racing for the smaller boats in the White fleet was cancelled before any boats had left for the race area but the decision on the Black fleet abandonment was taken just twenty minutes prior to the planned starting sequence.

Winter Series Race Director Jamie Wilkinson explained his thoughts behind the decision to competitors back in the warmth of the Hamble River Sailing Club bar. On arriving in the racing area, the committee boat crew had encountered extremely bad visibility in heavy rain squalls to the extent that they were unable to see the proposed pin end mark. It was also consistently blowing 30-35 knots and racing would have been both unsafe and very miserable. A reluctant decision was made to send the 30 or so boats that had come out to play back home without a race.

Fingers are now crossed for good weather conditions for the conclusion of the Garmin Hamble Winter Series on Sunday when the race committee plans to run two races for Black fleet competitors and three for White fleet competitors.

The Garmin Hamble Winter Series runs from October 5th to November 30th.
