Glassy calm

Greets Block Island Race Week competitors after day two of the regatta

Wednesday June 25th 2003, Author: Keith Taylor, Location: United States
Slow and sultry summer conditions today slammed the 200-plus racers at the Storm Trysail Club's Block Island Race Week presented by Rolex.

Faced with a glassy calm and no wind, boats and crews sat it out ashore for two hours before the Principal Race Officer Peter Reggio sent the fleet to sea. There were further delays before racing began in a southeasterly breeze that built in strength to ten knots.

Despite the difficult conditions, the boats in the Red Fleet, including the IMS big boats, Farr 40s and 12 meters succeeded in sailing two races. In the closely-fought Farr 40 Class, Marc Ewing's Riot leads by just one point from Eric Moog's Dynamo and the US Merchant Marine Academy's Columbia steered by Lee Fraser.

In the Blue Fleet, among the 33 boats in the J/105 one-design class it was Robert Salk's Picante that made the most of its opportunities and came away with the victory. Third place went to Pretty Sketchy, skippered by Thomas Enright, and helmed by his 18-year-old son Charlie. She finished 22 seconds behind Picante in one of the closest races in the fleet yesterday. Combined with Monday's second place in Race 1,
Pretty Sketchy leads the J/105 class with the low score of five points.

A battle royale is brewing in the PHRF 165-175 class between Chris Fesenmeyer's Air Express (San Juan 30) and Roy Sherman's Zephyr (Irwin 26). The two boats finished first and second in racing over the first two days, swapping turns at taking first.
