The Royal Cork Yacht Club confirms that Ford Cork Week 2002 has been successful both for the club and for the local economy.

Organising Committee Chairman Mr. James McGrath reported to the club this week that the week-long event had generated over Euro 10 million for the local economy.

"Not only does the village of Crosshaven benefit, but also the Greater Cork Harbour area, including Cobh, Monkstown and East Ferry. Indeed the impact is also felt in Cork city, Kinsale, Douglas, Carrigaline and Roberts Cove, among other places", Mr. McGrath added.

Before and after, as well as during Ford Cork Week in July, all hotels, guest houses, B & Bs, restaurants and bars were full to capacity with visitors and competitors from more than 10 foreign countries as well as Irish sailors and spectators. The exceptionally fine weather also contributed to a festive atmosphere in Crosshaven and the harbour for the event.

On behalf of the principal sponsor, Ford Ireland, Chairman and Managing Director Mr. Eddie Murphy congratulated everyone concerned with this year¹s event. "We are absolutely delighted that the organisers have reaped the reward for their tremendous efforts", said Mr. Murphy.

"That the success of Ford Cork Week 2002, waterside and shoreside, is confirmed by financial success for the Royal Cork Yacht Club is a source of great satisfaction for everyone associated with this major international event, and reflects the greatest credit on the club, its members and especially the organising committee," Mr. Murphy added.

Mr. McGrath said that this year¹s event had yielded a surplus of Euro 530,000. "This must be seen as a satisfactory return for all the unpaid voluntary time and effort put in by more than 250 club members. It is this major voluntary effort, as well as prudent cost control, which has helped the Royal Cork Yacht Club to achieve its best ever financial return from the event."

"We are also very pleased with the fact that this year the yacht racing, as well as the surrounding countryside and the harbour area, is being shown on television around the world on stations including Sky Sports; Fox Sports USA and South America, Eurosport, Star TV India and in China and Japan among other countries.

"On my own behalf, as Chairman of Ford Cork Week, I would like to thank all the volunteers, sponsors and competitors for making Ford Cork Week 2002 one of the most successful regattas in Ireland and internationally", Mr. McGrath said.
