Another Olympian joins Round the Island

More star recruits for Volvo for Life - Team Tonic

Olympic gold medallists Ben Ainslie and Shirley Robertson will be joined by Laser champion Paul Goodison aboard the Farr 52 Volvo for Life - Team Tonic when the boat races in the Round the Island Race on 21 June 2003.

This is also the first event being undertaken by the two young sailors who have been chosen to join the crew through the Volvo RYA Keelboat Programme. For this Volvo formed a partnership with the boat's owner Nick Hewson.

During the spring, many applicants to the programme have been given the opportunity to sail on Volvo for Life - Team Tonic, joining the regular crew with a view to selection for this season's programme, which includes the Fastnet Race, Admiral's Cup Regatta and Skandia Cowes Week. The programme proved so popular, trials needed to be extended by a month.

As well as gaining expert tuition from Ben, Shirley and Paul, the newcomers will also be able to see themselves on television. A crew from BBC Grandstand will be aboard Volvo for Life - Team tonic during the Round the Island Race with presenter and ex-England rugby player, Jeremy Guscott commentating. The coverage is scheduled for broadcast on Sunday 22 June.
