Decisive victory for Fantastica

As the Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series in Loano concludes

Sunday April 15th 2012, Author: Joy Dunigan, Location: Italy

The end was spectacular thanks to weather conditions throughout the first event of the 2012 Audi Sailing Series organized by BPSE - B-Plan Sports & Events, in collaboration with Melges Europe, Club Nautico Loano and Yacht Club Marina di Loano.

On the last day, finally the sun and an easterly wind of nearly 20 knots and waves created the ideal conditions for the final three racs for the 17-strong Melges 32 fleet.

Winner of the first event of the season is the defending champion Lanfranco Cirillo with Michele Paoletti as tactician aboard Fantastica. Today, thanks to a first, third and sixth, Cirillo's Fantastica ensured she kept a safe distance ahead of Vincenzo Onorato's Mascalzone Latino where Olympic 470 gold medallist Nathan Wilmot was calling tactics. Onorato had some satisfaction in winning the last race of the event thereby ensuring his second place overall.

In third is Rush Diletta helmed by Mauro Mocchegiani on which Matteo Ivaldi was calling tactics. They were by far the most consistent team discarding an eighth place finish in race two. Just off the podium was Edoardo Lupi's Torpyone which were able to discard the DSQ they picked up yesterday. Spain's Marc de Antonio aboard Bribon-Movistar came fifth with Filippo Pacinotti's Brontolo HH sixth overall.

With Marina di Loano now complete, the Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series will continue in Portoferraio (24-27 May), then the European Championship in Porto Cervo (28 June-1 July), Malcesine (19-22 July) and lastly, Naples (18-21 October), where the season will conclude.

Next weekend (20-22 April), again in the luxurious location of Marina di Loano, the Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series will commence.
