Fourth place at the recent Mumm 30 French National Championship may not sound impressive for a team that has aspirations of winning this years Tour de France à la Voile, but skipper Rob Greenhalgh says that things are still going according to plan.

"We went to see what our speed was like," Greenhalgh told madfor sailing today during a break from his dominating 18ft Skiff European Championship tilt in Carnac, where he is winning by a country mile, and a half.

The nationals, sailed from Lorient, is one of several warm-up events for Greenhalgh’s team and confirmed their suspicions of where they were bullet fast, and where their Achilles heel might lay. "When it was eight knots plus, we were dynamite," he explained. "When it was lighter we haven’t got problems, but we weren’t quite as quick. We knew that was going to be the case as we spend our lives sailing in eight knots plus and the French always sail in zero to eight knots [of breeze].

"I’d much rather keep our heavy air speed anyway. We start around the Atlantic coast where the chances of it being less than eight knots are pretty slim, but if it is we’ll probably be anchored anyway because the tides are so strong."

The French championship was won by one of the Tour favourites, Pierre-Loïc Berthet’s Saint-Nazaire. The main event itself gets underway in just over three weeks time.
