More mast carnage

As top of spar breaks on Simone Bianchetti's Tiscali

Tuesday May 28th 2002, Author: James Boyd, Location: Mediterranean
This morning at 0444 GMT, Simone Bianchetti's Open 60 Tiscali broke the top of her mast, while lying in fourth place in the Regata de Rubicon.

In a telephone conversation the Italian skipper said that no one was hurt during the incident and the hull was not too badly damaged. At the time they had been changing from the genoa to the Solent jib, but there had been a problem with the roller furler. At the moment Bianchetti is at a loss as to why the failure occurred.

They have stabilised the rig and they intend on continuing to the finish in Santa Margherita Ligure 268 miles away, where the front runners are due this evening. They are currently sailing under staysail alone.

His crew on the boat (formerly Catherine Chabaud's Whirlpool) are Stefano Raspadori, Mauro Piani, Yannick Bestaven and Tanguy Delamott.

Tiscali - in better days...
