The Minis move south to the Med for a long distance two handed race

Monday July 29th 2002, Author: Peter Scandling, Location: United Kingdom
The quest for a place in next year's Mini Transat continues with all eyes focused on the last major event of this season, the Triangle Du Soleil, a double-handed race in the Mediterranean starting today which takes competitors from Port Camargue round Minorca, to Ajaccio in Corsica and back. Competitors are travelling the length and breadth of Europe with boats in tow to secure a place on next September's start line.

The Brits continue to be well represented, with four boats taking part. Jill Falkingham will be hoping to complete her qualifying miles with this race. She is sailing with Ian Munslow, and will be hoping the gastric problems that led to her retirement from the Mini Fastnet, and the Demi Cle have now been resolved.

Cian McCarthy has also made the pilgrimage south, and will be sailing his new Owen Clarke design in its second race. Cian has repaired the bowsprit that broke during the Demi Cle and will be hoping to be up with the frontrunners. Completion of this event will be the priority for Cian who only needs another 300 racing miles to qualify for next year's race.

Reality has set in with Dave Barden and Jeremy Gregono who may well be taking part in their last Mini race. The pair were hoping to qualify for next year's Mini Transat but the financial strain has become to great, and due to a lack of potential sponsor the boat has been put on the market. Despite that, a finish in this race will mean that Dave has accrued enough miles to qualify for September should a sponsor be found.

The final Brit is Alan Critchon who makes in his first appearance this season. Alan has actually owned a Mini for several years now but work commitments have severely curtailed his racing. He is hoping to race in 2003. Indeed a recent announcement makes it a possibility. Another race has been added to the calendar for September this year, the Solo Chrono, from Lorient around the Iles De Groix and back. The course will cover about 300 miles and will enable those who have competed in a major race earlier in the season to complete their qualifying racing miles. Which should mean all the Brits currently sailing should get a place.

Whilst some of 'Team Glaouch' (the name given to the Brits racing on the mini circuit) are preparing for the Triangle two, Nick Bubb and James Bird, are making their way around the qualifying course in the Atlantic.

This is known as the 'cruise'. A thousand miles single-handed. This is not a race but a training run. The skipper can choose when to leave and from where, He must then round Conningbeg buoy off Ireland and the Ile de Re off the French coast. Skippers need to take sights on the way round and upon completion must submit their charts and sights for ratification by the Classe Mini. Upon completion of the 'cruise' Nick will become the second Brit eligible for the race behind Ian Munslow.
