Tiscali back in action

Simone Bianchetti's Open 60 sets sail for Cape Town

Saturday November 9th 2002, Author: Mary Ambler/James Boyd, Location: Transoceanic

Today at 0500 GMT, Simone Bianchetti's Open 60 Tiscali left the port of El Ferrol del Caudillo in Northern Spain bound for Cape Town (South Africa), where she is expected in 30 days time.

Since 23 October, the boat has been moored at the Spanish Naval base 15 miles northeast of the commercial port of La Coruna, since her dismasting.

The stricken yacht has been able to rejoin the race after a replacement mast was made available by competitor and current leader Bernard Stamm, with transportation of the mast to Spain aboard the Pindar trawler, Hatherleigh. The boat now has a suit of sails entirely customised to the new rig. Tiscali set sail in rain, with 25-30 knots of wind from the WSW.

Work was also been done on the electronics and three stanchions broken during the dismasting.

Bianchetti has a little more than one month to make Cape Town, where the restart is scheduled for 14 December.
