Gitana commit to the MOD 70
The next steps for Baron Benjamin de Rothschild's Gitana team have been announced. Following 10 years of the Gitana team, and its competition in the ORMA 60 multihull class, so the team are to join Steve Ravussin's Veltigroup and Michel Desjoyeaux's Foncia in the MOD70 class.
"Apart from Gitana Eighty [Loick Peyron's entry in the last Vendee Globe] the background to the Gitana Team has always been on multihulls," says Cyril Dardashti, Managing Director of Gitana Team. "After the fall of the ORMA circuit despite the efforts to offer a future for the 60ft multihulls we were in need of a circuit. The Multi One Championship is what we have been waiting for. Through competitive sailing we wish to support and perpetuate family values: going beyond oneself, the systematic search of excellence, team work, and innovation. To appear among the pioneers of this new class seemed natural to us.
“The choice of our owners to continue the Gitana history in the Multi One Championship is formidable news for the team, which has been involved in multihull classes for nearly ten years. The future programme announced by the Multi One Design class is to alternate offshore races with Grand Prix regattas, but the step further goes than the ORMA Championship with a round the world race with stopovers to be held every three years. This new dimension represents an additional attraction for us. The national clauses and the will to make this more international are also very important points for this circuit, because the ORMA championship always suffered from being too French. I hope that foreign crews will join this project.”
President of Multi One Design S.A., Marco Simeoni greeted the Gitana team's entry into the Multi One Championship: “It is an honour and a great pleasure for Multi One Design SA to accommodate the famous Gitana Team into the MOD 70," he said. "The success of the Gitana team and the commitment of Baron Benjamin de Rothschild to multihulls are exemplary. This participation shows the high sporting level that will be the Multi One Championship."
The new Gitana MOD 70 is set to be launched in September 2011. It will be the ninth Gitana Team yacht to race under the colours of Group Edmond de Rothschild.
In the interim, Gitana Team will be competing this year on the Extreme Sailing Series, but the major event will be the Route du Rhum where they have modified and lengthened one of their ORMA 60 trimarans which will be sailed singlehanded by their skipper, ex Tornado Olympian Yann Guichard.
